December 25 – The True Meaning of Christmas

Standard

What is the true meaning of Christmas? Some say family. Some say peace on earth. Some say giving. Headlines, commercials, and Christmas movies often make some nice comment about the “true meaning of Christmas” being one of these or a thousand other things. But while these are good, they really miss the point. I know I’m preaching to the choir, but I want to encourage you to not get sucked into these holiday “niceties.”

The real meaning of Christmas is this: “For God so loved the world that He gave His Only Begotten Son, that whosoever should believe in Him should not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). The point isn’t some general principle of giving. No! The point is that God gave us Himself in His Son. Jesus is the true meaning of Christmas. Actually, He is the only meaning of Christmas, at least the Christmas that has to do with Christ. It is so simple that we often miss it, wanting to draw general principles and applications from God’s action. But instead, let’s revel in the wonder of the actual Gift! What a gift we have been given, the Christ-Child!

So as you enjoy your family, friends, stockings, presents, and good food (all things I look forward to enjoying), may the true meaning of Christmas, the gospel itself, the very fact that God has given us Himself, be your center and focus, your hope and joy. Merry Christmas!!!
